Faced with this situation for the first time, designers may come up with a solution that works on paper but introduces serious consequences. They design a type 2 solution, which allows the dimension to capture old and new versions of the changed attributes. In the fact table, the dimension s natural key is included in place of its surrogate key. This approach theoretically allows any version of the change history in the dimension to be used in the analysis of facts. Unfortunately, it renders reporting exceedingly difficult. Worse, it introduces the possibility of inaccurate results if the dimension is not carefully qualified. If you have ever considered doing this, read on. If not, there is no reason to confuse yourself; skip ahead to The Type 3 Solution. In this scenario, a row in the fact table may refer to more than one row in the dimension table. There must be a mechanism to allow users to choose the appropriate version of the dimension values when building a query, in order to avoid double counting. This might be achieved by time-stamping the dimension, as discussed earlier in this chapter. Whenever customer is joined to the fact table, it will be necessary to use the time stamps to select the desired version of each customer. Querying the fact table will now require analysts to think as follows: I want to see sales by region for the third quarter of last year, using the regional groupings for customers that were current on January 31st of this year.

Each query requires multiple dates or date ranges: one to control the scope of the facts ( the third quarter of last year ) and one to control the dimension ( current on January 31st of this year ). This logic is quite tortured; the design approach is yet another example of boiling the frog. (See 4 for more on boiling frogs.) It may be possible to train analysts to query the star properly, but there is no hope that end users will be able to build their own queries. The consequences for improper query construction are dire. As the regions change, multiple versions of customers accumulate in the dimension table. Since each row in the fact table contains the natural key for customers, it is associated with multiple rows in the dimension table one for each version of the customer. Failure to qualify the dimension properly can result in the fact being counted redundantly once for each version of customer. The result is a serious misstatement of order dollars. TIP Use of a natural key as a foreign key in the fact table requires the associated dimension table to be carefully qualified every time it participates in a query. Failure to do so can result in double-counting or worse.

Finally, all of this information and content must be updated several times per year to keep pace with Microsoft s aggressive product release schedule. MSDN was designed to meet these goals. Like Microsoft TechNet, MSDN is a subscription-based product that distributes information on CD-ROMs. Subscribers receive copies of all major Microsoft products (including international versions) and up-to-date documentation for Microsoft Visual Studio and other development tools and APIs. For easy reference, a lot of this information is also available on the msdn.microsoft.com website. Figure A-2 shows some of of the types of information available.

When requirements call for using the old or new values of a changed attribute to study all facts, a type 3 response is used. A pair of attributes is modeled, one attribute for the current value and one for the previous value. When a change occurs, both columns are updated; no rows are added. Users can employ either column in their analysis as desired. The process is repeatable, and the solution can be extended if multiple versions of the changed attribute are required.

The Microsoft Knowledge Base consists of product support bulletins, bug reports, and troubleshooting information for working with Microsoft products. Microsoft uses the letter Q followed by six digits that uniquely identify each of the documents available. Infor-
