A SQL2 domain generalizes the check-constraint concept and allows you to easily apply the same check constraint to many different columns within a database. A domain is a collection of legal data values. You specify a domain and assign it a domain name using the SQL2 CREATE DOMAIN statement, described in 13. As with the checkconstraint definition, a search condition is used to define the range of legal data values. For example, here is a SQL2 CREATE DOMAIN statement to create the domain VALID_EMPLOYEE_ID, which includes all legal employee numbers: CREATE DOMAIN VALID_EMPLOYEE_ID INTEGER CHECK (VALUE BETWEEN 101 AND 199) After the VALID_EMPLOYEE_ID domain has been defined, it may be used to define columns in database tables instead of a data type. Using this capability, the example CREATE TABLE statement for the SALESREPS table would appear as: CREATE TABLE SALESREPS (EMPL_NUM VALID_EMPLOYEE_ID, AGE INTEGER CHECK (AGE >= 21), . . . QUOTA MONEY CHECK (MONEY >= 0.0) . . . The advantage of using the domain is that if other columns in other tables also contain employee numbers, the domain name can be used repeatedly, simplifying the table definitions. The OFFICES table contains such a column: CREATE TABLE (OFFICE CITY REGION MGR TARGET SALES . . . OFFICES INTEGER NOT NULL, VARCHAR(15) NOT NULL, VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL, VALID_EMPLOYEE_ID, MONEY, MONEY NOT NULL

There are many ways to publicize policies. Perhaps the most traditional (and potentially inefficient) is the standard method of handing out procedure handbooks to employees. There are probably better ways, though. Posting information on the company s intranet and sending occasional reminders to users can also be very helpful, as long as the information is maintained and revised as necessary. The schema in the lower portion of Figure 14-2 pivots information from the original schema so it is in the desired format. Rather than holding a single fact and a transition type, it contains multiple facts one for each transaction type. Reports that require credits and debits to appear on a single row can be constructed using this star, rather than the original star. Fancy SQL will not be required, nor will the use of advanced report development features. It is possible to implement this particular pivoted fact table using a view. In other cases, it may be better implemented as a physical table and loaded by an ETL process. TIP A pivoted schema transposes row-wise data to column-wise data or vice versa. This effort can reduce the complexity of the query and reporting process. Notice that either star in the example can be used to construct the other. It would have been equally possible to derive the top star from the bottom star, transposing each fact table row into rows for each of the transaction types. This is not always possible with pivoted schemas. Sometimes the derivation can only take place in one direction. If the original star had a transaction-level grain, for example, then the derived star would have summarized data across numerous transactions. A table's primary key must have a unique value for each row of the table, or the database will lose its integrity as a model of the outside world. For example, if two rows of the
